The Seven Lakes Route winds its way through coniferous forests, snow-capped mountains and lakes of breathtaking hues
The Route des Sept Lacs (Route 234) is one of the most beautiful in the region and, in good weather, a spectacle not to be missed under any circumstances. The road winds its way through coniferous forests, snow-capped mountains and breathtakingly coloured lakes. The lakes in question are Nahuel Huapí, Correntoso, Espejo, Escondido, Villarino and its neighbour Falkner, Hermoso and, finally, Lácar.
The options: you can be satisfied with a bus ride to San Martín de los Andes - the cheapest alternative, but at the same time you won't really enjoy the scenery -, take a tour with an agency or rent a car. Another idea is to cycle along the road, as there are many campsites along the lake, free of charge or not. Avoid excursions: all the buses follow one another (and look alike), and the only stops are photo breaks. You don't enjoy many of the wonders you've seen, and an irrepressible frustration may overwhelm you on the way back. If you can, rent a car and take the time to enjoy the road. Sleep in San Martín de los Andes, and the next day return to Bariloche following the route traditionally followed by agencies. Retrace your steps and after about 25 km turn off towards Paso del Córdoba. These are superb landscapes after having walked along Lake Meliquina, which present interesting rocky figures with evocative silhouettes. The more wine you drink at lunch, the more the figures will reveal their mystical meaning!
