OPERA OF LINZ (MUSIKTHEATER)
The Linz Opera House programs operas, operettas and choreographies, as well as works for young audiences.
Inaugurated and taken over by the city's Landtheater in 2013, the Linz Opera House programs operas, operettas and choreographies, as well as works for young audiences. The house even has its own musical comedy company. The repertoire comprises 50 productions, allowing for a variety of different performances over the course of a week. Nevertheless, contemporary works are given pride of place.
The opera houses a large auditorium with a capacity of 1,250 spectators; the Black Box, a 250-seat studio for more intimate performances; and the orchestra rehearsal room.
The main foyer (1st row) covers an area of 800 m² and sometimes hosts children's operas.
The "Klang"(German for "sound ")foyer, located on the second row, opens its doors 3 afternoons a week to the general public to listen to archival music.
The panoramic Das Anton restaurant on the4th floor is open independently of the opera house, and the Café Volksgarten on the first floor is open daily from 8am to 11pm.
Last but not least, the opera house is located in the Volksgarten, right next to the train station, combining a peaceful environment with easy access.
A long-term construction project: in 2006, the city of Linz launched an architectural competition for the opera building project, which was won by Terry Pawson. Work on the opera house took place between April 2009 and April 2013, when it officially opened to the public.
