ULM CATHEDRAL
Gothic cathedral famous for its high bell tower, 161.5 metres high, with a breathtaking view of the Alps.
With its monumental west tower, the Gothic cathedral overlooks the city center. It's world-famous for a record that's often overlooked by the locals themselves: at 161.5 meters, it boasts the world's tallest bell tower. The city's citizens joined forces to build the cathedral, second only to Cologne in the German Gothic architectural style.
From the viewing platform at the top of the tower (143 metres, or 768 steps, after all!), the view is quite breathtaking. On a clear day, you can even see the Alpine peaks. The first phase of construction of the Münster, then a Catholic church, lasted from 1377 until the first half of the 16th century, when Ulm joined the Reformation. Prior to this, several master builders succeeded one another in constructing a building that was already tall and massive, and richly decorated by numerous artists - such as Schulin for the Last Judgement fresco on the triumphal arch at the entrance to the choir. The building was not completed until 500 years later. The construction work had to be halted regularly over the centuries due to a lack of funds, the costs being borne entirely by the citizens, not the clergy. At the end of the 19th century, work was resumed on the west tower, which, at 161.5 meters, became the tallest bell tower in the world. We recommend a visit to learn more about Ulm's history and enjoy the panoramic view from the very tall tower!
