GROTTA DEL VENTO
A region rich in karst phenomena located in one of the wildest areas of the Apuan Alps Natural Park
In northern Tuscany, Garfagnana is known as a region rich in spectacular karst phenomena. Here is the proof.... Located in one of the wildest places in the Apuan Alps Natural Park, 14 kilometres from Barga, this immense underground labyrinth, crossed by a river with translucent waters, promises a fabulous journey to the heart of the earth!
Discovered in 1898, first explored in 1929 and then opened to the public in 1967, the Grotta del Vento is one of the most beautiful caves in Europe. Shiny stalactites and stalagmites, with unreal shapes and colours, adorn its walls. You will feel like you are on a lunar journey. The name of this cave ("wind cave") comes from the many draughts that constantly pass through it. So don't forget to take a little wool! Rather cool, the temperature of 10.7°C is constant all year round, as is the high humidity level. If summer is hot, you know where to go!
On arrival at the site, located near Fornovolasco, you will have the opportunity to choose between three different visiting itineraries, ranging from one to three hours. For those who are keen on sensations, it is also possible to follow - only by reservation - caving routes (the "Gli Abissi della Luce" itinerary includes a ten-metre rope descent into the void, lasting three hours; or the "I Corridoi delle Tenebre" itinerary with two descents into the void, lasting five hours).
