FORTEZZA DI MONT'ALFONSO
Mont'Alfonso fortress built between 1579 and 1586 to defend the town of Castelnuovo di Garfagnana.
Situated at the confluence of two rivers, the town of Castelnuovo di Garfagnana was easily attacked. Its inhabitants therefore pooled their savings to purchase this imposing fortress, one of the most impressive monuments in the Serchio valley, built by Alfonso II d'Este between 1579 and 1586. Later turned into an arms foundry, it is now a pleasant place to take a stroll, accessible on foot along the Ariosto trail, about 10 minutes by car from the center of Castelnuovo. The site offers splendid views of the Apuan Alps.
