ARLINGTON NATIONAL CEMETERY
Arlington Military Cemetery, in a special atmosphere, where 175,000 fallen soldiers are buried
It is the country's military cemetery, the final resting place of 175,000 war dead (400,000 people if their families are included). There are the graves of the crew of the space shuttle Challenger, President John Fitzgerald Kennedy, his brother Robert, who was also murdered in 1968, and his wife Jackie Kennedy. The cemetery was built in 1857 and has never ceased to expand. In this special atmosphere, you can see the tomb of the Unknown Soldier (a museum is dedicated to him) and especially attend the changing of the guard (every 30 minutes between April and September, if not every hour). Indeed, his grave has been guarded by a soldier day and night since 1937.
Not to be missed:
Memorials such as the one dedicated to the victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks at the Pentagon, the one dedicated to the astronauts killed in the explosion of the Challenger and Columbia shuttles, or the Lockerbie Memorial which pays tribute to the 270 victims of the Pan Am flight explosion in Scotland.
The grave of John Fitzgerald Kennedy where he is buried with his family.
The Arlington Cemetery Amphitheatre, the site surrounded by columns, hosts the main events and ceremonies that take place in the cemetery.
Arlington House, the former residence of Confederate General Lee, is being renovated until 2019.
