LAKE OF MOLVENO
Lake Molveno, one of the most beautiful of the Dolomites.
Reputed to be one of the most beautiful lakes in the Dolomites, Lake Molveno was formed in post-glacial times, when a huge avalanche broke loose from the mountain, causing the valley to close. About 130 metres deep, its clear waters hide a prehistoric forest, with signs of settlements dating back to the Bronze Age. On the west bank, in the woods, are the "Napoleon's Little Forts", remains of fortifications erected by the Austrians at the beginning of the 19th century to prevent the advance of Napoleon's troops.
