COLLÉGIALE SAINT-ETIENNE
Church featuring a 100 fresco inside and a view of the Vosges, Rhine plain and Black Forest outside.
This building stands on a rocky spur of the upper Rhine river area. An extraordinary jewel in the southwest Kaiserstuhl that impresses visitors by far. The construction of the abbatial church began in the twelfth century, in the Gothic era. Inside, a magnificent wooden retable of 1526 awaits visitors. The interior belongs to the most beautiful achievements of late Gothic in the upper Rhine basin. The painter Martin Schongauer painted a 100 square meter triptych fresco on the theme of the last judgment, restored between 1985 and 1993. From the outside, the view opens onto the Vosges, the Rhine plain and the Black Forest.
