ST. TRUDPERT
Former abbey built on the tomb of St. Trudpert, now a parish church in the Münstertal valley.
Imposing and majestic, the former abbey of Sankt Trudpert welcomes visitors as they push their way through Münstertal. The cloister was built in 815 by Benedictine monks, following the assassination of St. Trudpert. The building was erected over his grave. The Benedictines lived and worked here according to the rules of the Order of St. Benedict. Today, the Sisters of St. Joseph of St. Mark occupy the provincial house within the cloister. They organize days of meditation, spiritual exercises, conferences and events, in the spirit of the message of faith taught by Saint Trudpert. This private part is closed to the public. The abbey's former church, a masterpiece of Baroque art, is open to the public. Today, it is the parish church of the Münstertal valley. It bears the imprint of St. Trudpert, the patron saint of the Breisgau. On the Sunday following April 26, the anniversary of the saint's death, the great Feast of St. Trudpert takes place here: a procession of groups dressed in traditional costume parades around the chapel, monastery and church, carrying the statue of the saint, the Baroque reliquary from 1714 and the famous 12th-century niello cross.
