Tracing the border between Idaho and Oregon, the Snake River flows north through an attractive landscape. From Hells Canyon Dam to its confluence with the Clearwater River, the river has dug a deeper gorge than that of the Grand Canyon, sometimes reaching 2 600 m high.
Surrounded by fine sandy beaches, its course is peaceful, sometimes interrupted by impressive rapids. On both sides the slopes are worn by torrents, meadows and forests. The first explorers were so terrified by these extreme reliefs that they called them «the canyon of hell» and «the mountain of the seven devils»! Today, the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area protects this excepionnelle nature. Difficult access, this site remains unknown, unfortunately.
