CASTEL MIMI
The history of Castel Mimi began when Constantin Mimi planted the first vines imported from France on the site in 1893. Of Greco-Albanian origin, he played a major role in the development of viticulture in the country. He introduced the Aligoté grape, which is now widespread on Moldavian soil. Constantin Mimi studied for two years at the Higher School of Agronomy in Montpellier, learning about vine cultivation and winemaking methods. In 1901, he had a manor house built with classical architecture inspired by a French castle. The building is majestic, on two levels and is listed as a historic monument in the country. In 1911, Mimi's wines took part in the International Wine Exhibition in Turin, Italy, where they found their place among European productions. From 1913 to 1917, Constantin Mimi served Imperial Russia as governor of Bessarabia. King Carol II of Romania visited the estate in 1925 and appointed Constantin Mimi as head of the Romanian Central Bank the following year. During the Soviet era and until the 2000s, the complex underwent a number of successive modernizations. In 2011, the restoration of the castle was launched. Nowadays, the estate uses state-of-the-art winemaking processes (vats imported from Western Europe and French barrels). In addition to visits and tastings, the estate offers a large gourmet restaurant, a hotel in one of the wings of the château and a spa.
