Inaugurated on 6 October 1921, it is the oldest theatre in the city, named after the Romanian poet Mihai Eminescu. It changed its name in the course of history: State Moldovan Theatre of the Moldovan SSR in 1940, then State Moldovan Musical and Dramatic Theatre Alexander Pushkin, before taking the name Eminescu in 1988. A classical repertoire is performed in Romanian. This theatre and its troupe have received numerous awards and distinctions at international festivals.
