The Anton Chekhov Theatre was founded in 1934 in Tiraspol and established in 1940 at Chișinău. He was transferred to Odessa in 1941, then to Cherkessk and, in 1942, to Mary, in the Soviet Socialist Republic of Turkmenistan, before returning to the Moldovan capital in 1944. This theatre is located on the site of what was the former synagogue choir of Chișinău from 1913 to 1940. Nowadays, a classical and modern repertoire is played in Russian. You will appreciate the rich and varied programming if you are Russian speaking.
