THEODORE CHURCH OF SIHLA
You can't miss this church which is located in the heart of the city centre, close to the Romanian embassy and famous bars and restaurants. In Pushkin street stood the former girls' gymnasium, the famous architect Alexandru Bernardazzi built the chapel in 1895 at the request of the administration of the said gymnasium. Bernardazzi aligned the chapel with the gymnasium to ensure their internal communication. The consecration of the chapel took place twenty-seven years after its construction due to a tragic event, the death of a construction worker. The style is dominated by classical Russian architecture, eclectically combined with elements of Ottoman architecture. Inside, the eye is drawn to the brightly coloured frescoes depicting saints or biblical scenes. The wooden iconostasis is finely crafted and incorporates beautiful icons. On the side wall a plaque was installed in 1983 (whose sculptor is Mr. Gorinăşev) in homage to the architect Bernardazzi, the author of the most representative buildings of the city. The church returned to its spiritual function in 1994. This church is very popular, especially for the great religious festivals such as Easter or Christmas. The masses are magnificent, it is possible to follow the liturgy in old or new style. Admission is free and non-believers or believers of other religions are welcome. Please remember to dress appropriately if you visit the premises.
