CHURCH OF SAINT YESTERDAYARQUE NICOLAS
This white church with its bright blue roofs was built in 1901 by the architect Vladimir Țîganco and is one of the architectural monuments of national importance. Originally it served as a chapel at the Zemstvo Hospital founded by Dr. Ivanov. Its eclectic architecture is based on Russian architectural language (very common at the time), as is the decorum of its beautiful façade with elegant forms and motifs inspired by kokoshniks (traditional Russian female headdresses). The plan follows that of a basilica, composed of 3 naves, separated by cast iron columns. This recently renovated building is well worth a visit, the frescoes on the walls and ceilings flood the interior with colour. The main entrance and the pediment are overhung by an elongated bell tower ending with a bulb and a cross, all of a beautiful green colour. The secondary entrance was through the hospital. Inside, the altar is hidden by a large iconostasis in finely worked wood with three rows of icons representing Christ, the Virgin Mary and various saints. The ceiling is finely decorated with gold patterns, frescoes and a very nice hanging chandelier. The renovations of the last few years have brought out the brightness of the colours of the exterior facades and, lit up at night, the church is beautiful. The building is under state protection. Behind the church there is a small, rather pleasant park.
