SAINT ALEXANDER NEVSKY'S CATHEDRAL
This cathedral has an original and interesting architecture. Its author is the famous architect Alexandru Bernardazzi, to whom we owe many monuments in the capital. The location of the cathedral has a certain historical value, as in 1877 the Russian imperial troops were ordered here to go into battle against the Ottoman forces. Construction of the cathedral began in 1903 and was completed in 1906. In Soviet times it was closed in 1959, and in July 1967 it became a museum of history and ethnography. In 1968, the building was classified as a monument of national historic and architectural importance. From May 1989, with the help of the parishioners, restoration work was carried out and the church was restored in 1991. In April 2011, it received the rank of Episcopal Cathedral and is one of the symbols of the city of Ungheni.
This building with its russo-byzantine architecture is an exception in his work. A concentric plan, a storey bell tower flanked by two decorative turrets and a facade that excludes the abundance of details and colours are all atypical elements for the architect. The concentric part takes the shape of Russian-style drums with larger dimensions. On the entire perimeter of the drum, arched windows illuminate the interior of the church. The calotte vault rests directly on the walls of the building, enhanced on the outside by a bulbous turret.
