SAINT IERARH NICOLAE CHURCH
Built in 1882 by Prince Constantin Moruzi, owner of the estate Dănuţeni, this church is today part of Ungheni. A wooden church dedicated to St. Nicholas was already on this site in 1812. The village belonged to Iordache Balș who bequeathed it to his son in 1822. The prince of Phanariot origin Constantin Moruzi became the owner of the place from the second half of the 19th century. He had the new brick church built on the hill, from which he could see the Romanian city of Iași and its metropolitan cathedral. At the beginning of the 20th century, a parish school for 54 children was operating on the estate. The parish owned more than 33 ha of land and had an annual income of 500 rubles. After a long period of activity, it was closed in 1961-1964 by the Soviet authorities, but the population opposed its destruction. Some objects of worship were looted but many icons and iconostasis have survived to the present day. In 1981 the local people tried to restore the church on a voluntary basis, but the Soviet authorities prevented them from doing so. The church was returned to worship in the early 1990s.
Its style is marked by Russian church architecture, which is characterized by a cross-shaped plan, a square nave, nine towers and turrets with metal roofs and Russian style. The church houses the marble tomb of the founder Moruzi and his descendants.
