MUSEUM OF HISTORY AND ETHNOGRAPHY
It is a precious institution for Ungheni which, thanks to an important research work, has collected 10,000 objects in order to valorize and tell the history of this central region of Prut. The region is historically rich and there are several archaeological sites. The museum was opened in 1967 as a result of the requests and efforts of local teachers and their students. Here one discovers the detailed history and culture of Ungheni and its surroundings, combined with that of the Romanians in general. The objects are presented with care and very well highlighted through a sensitive itinerary. The museum's collection is wide, including archaeological pieces, old objects of the local popular crafts, tools and wood carvings (crosses, looms), traditional costumes, carpets, ceramics. A large collection of plastic art (paintings, drawings, caricatures) is also exhibited and presents the works of contemporary Moldavian artists such as Mihai Grecu, Ada Zevin, Andrei Mudrea, Vera Țoncev, Valentin Vârtosu, Emil Childescu, Ion Zderciuc, Dumitru Verdianu, Valentin Vârtosu, Tudor Cataraga, Ilie Cojocaru and Victor Crudu. Thematic exhibitions and conferences are often organised on site. This museum and its collaborators have played an important role in the conservation and promotion of Moldovan historical and cultural heritage. The museum publishes a magazine called Pyretus.
