ETHNOGRAPHIC MUSEUM
The town of Edineţ is famous for its museum with a collection of objects related to the crafts of the region, such as the weaving of wicker baskets, ironwork through decorative hardware, fabric making, traditional costumes, embroidery and carpets. The building is a beautiful house with red ochre walls built in 1922 by Hova and Shmil Leibman. In 1930 the building was donated to the local Jewish community for use as a hospital. In memory of this community, which made up 90% of the local population in 1830, a section dedicated to its history was opened in the museum in 2015. The historical section of the museum was opened in 1992 and it displays coins, flags, the medals of the sportsman Simion Furman and various objects related to the history of the region during the Russian, Romanian and then Soviet imperial periods. Opened in 1993, the section dedicated to folk art includes more than 400 pieces presented in specific rooms: cult objects, tools, pottery, wooden crafts, carpets, embroidery, traditional costumes... In the natural section, opened in 1982, there are various animals stuffed or preserved in jars, fossils such as petrified wood and mammoth teeth.
In May 2019 the museum Edineț and its director Larisa Iaroțchi received a diploma of honour from the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Moldova. Many other museums across the country have also received awards.
