FOLK MUSEUM
In 1984, the Museum of Folk Art was established in what was the home of a former Armenian nobleman by the name of Karabet Balioz. The latter bought the land from the Donici family in 1840. Built between 1853 and 1873, this beautiful house with classical architecture, characteristic of the houses of Russian aristocrats of the 19th century, is set in the middle of a charming park. A water tower with clock, a cellar, a barn, a mill, stables and a forge were the outbuildings of this magnificent manor house. The house is remarkable for its harmonious white and sky blue colour as well as the frieze running along the facades on which one can see very fine plant motifs and the face of a man wearing a hat. The 7 ha park was laid out by the descendants of Karabet Balioz in 1880 and it includes various types of fruit and forest trees including many foreign species such as Canadian black spruce, Chinese wisteria, red linden... In 1941 the manor house became a military hospital, then baths and a library. The authorities decided to protect the site in 1975 and the manor house became a museum of folk crafts in 1984. Restorations began at that time and are still continuing.
The museum exhibited a large collection related to the know-how of traditional Moldavian art of the 19th and 20th centuries (looms, spinning wheels, carpets). As access to the museum is limited, you can explore the park and the manor's outbuildings.
