As there are not many wooden churches left, one cannot resist the small detour to see this one, saved, rescued from this tumultuous past where they have almost all been destroyed or burned. The date of construction of this very small church dates back to 1775, it is precious for Moldavia as a witness of the peasant religious architecture with its wooden structure, wooden walls, roof and wooden tiles.
The surroundings have known an ancient settlement dating back to the Roman occupation of Dacia and disrupted by the invasions of the Huns in the 4th century. Archaeologists have found pottery from the 2nd-4th centuries on site. The village of Gîrbova is ancient and was already mentioned in documents dating back to 1554. In 1803 it belonged to the monastery of Saint Sava of Iași and then, from 1817, to the monastery of Frumoasa. A school opened in the village in 1894. Its population was particularly affected by the famine of 1946-1947. The village developed in Soviet times with a school, a cultural centre, two libraries, a medical and social services clinic, a post office and two shops. In 1968, archaeologists discovered a treasure trove of 25 gold and 221 silver coins on site, including Dutch ducats, an Austrian ducat of Joseph II (1765-1790), rubles from the time of Catherine II of Russia (1762-1796) and Austrian thalers from the reign of Empress Maria Theresa (1740-1780).
