ST. THEODORE STRATILAT CHURCH
This religious building is located in the north on the heights of the city, near the Gypsy hill, the agricultural technical college and the prison. It can be identified by its gilded roof and the bulb of its bell tower. The church was built in 1914 by the architect C. N. Bolșov (or Bolșacov), on the initiative of one of the most important landowners and nobles of the region, Marshal Aleikov. Its original composition dominates Soroca. The church has stone turrets and arches supported by limestone blocks decorate the surrounding wall. Its base is not very extensive and its cross plan is rather stocky. Its entrance is topped by a high bell tower. Looking at it from the entrance, the church gives the impression of rising and going towards the sky. Some elements are characteristic of the influence of the 1900 style. There are elements of Art Deco and Russian Modernism in the architecture of the building. Some see similarities in its architecture with that of the Church of Our Lady of Parhomovca, built in the Kiev region between 1903 and 1907 by architects Vladimir Pokrovsky and Nikolai Blagovechensky. Its architecture is also somewhat reminiscent of Russian medieval churches. The interior frescoes show scenes from biblical history, such as the baptism of Christ by St. John the Baptist. Evangelists and apostles are painted at the base of the dome. This monument is under the protection of the state.
