MUZEUL DE ISTORIE ŞI ETNOGRAFIE DIN SOROCA
The museum is in the city centre and was founded on 13 May 1907. The building was destroyed in 1944 and reopened in 1959 on the initiative of the municipal authorities and the Ministry of Culture of the Moldovan SSR. Its architecture is charming, you will recognize it by its peach-coloured facades and its pointed red roof over the entrance. Nicolae Bulat manages the museum and the fortress of Soroca. A distinguished scholar on the history of his city, it is thanks to his efforts that the museum, which began by presenting five objects, now possesses more than 30,000 of them. It is the result of archaeological discoveries on the sites of Soroca, Trifăuți and Vărvăreuca (weapons, pottery), but also objects of everyday life (old furniture, fabrics, knitwear) providing rich information on the history of the Soroca region. One can admire many carpets, a press, a loom, tools, furniture, pottery, traditional costumes, old icons... The collection extends from Antiquity to the 19th and 20th centuries.
Temporary exhibitions of watercolours depicting country scenes from the surrounding area or of photographs are sometimes organised at the museum. Lectures on historical subjects are also held there occasionally. By visiting the Soroca museum, the fortress and some sites in the surrounding area, you will appreciate the cultural richness of the region. The members of the museum are always happy to share their knowledge on the subject.
