COMRAT VINURI
The southern climate of Gagauzia and its soil provide a favourable environment for viticulture. Gagauz wines are as famous as wines from other regions of Moldova. The Comrat Wine Society was founded in 1897, during the Tsarist era. In 1969 it was integrated into a complex of fifteen sovkhozes and eight wine factories processing 80,000 tons of grapes per year. Nowadays, 5,000-6,000 tons of grapes are harvested and produce 3 million bottles of wine every year. The company produces white wines (aligoté, sauvignon, chardonnay, feteasca alba, pinot gris and traminer rose), red wines (cabernet-sauvignon, merlot, pinot noir) and rosé. The most remarkable are Roza Comratului and Vodolei for white wines. For the red wines, it is the Roşu of Comrat, an excellent and harmonious marriage of cabernet-sauvignon and pinot, considered a must by the winemakers of Comrat. Sweet wines such as Muscat or the sweet wine called Cahors are also very popular. Three formulas for cellar visits and tastings are available for groups of at least 5 people. At the beginning of October, Wine Day is celebrated on site: concerts, cellar visits, sports activities, wine tastings, Moldavian and Gagauz gastronomy are on the programme.
