MUZEUL DE ISTORIE
The town was first mentioned in 1605. What was once a village developed in the 1940s and 1960s into a small town. On 23 December 1993, Vulcănești was incorporated into the autonomous territorial unit of Gagauzia. The city has developed relations with other cities in Romania, Russia, Belarus and Turkey. The History Museum is located behind the central park on Lenin Street, between the river Cahul and School No. 1. It is a building with a salmon-pink, slightly ochre facade and white column patterns. It houses a unique collection of eighteen exhibitions related to the history of the southern part of Moldova. There are traditional handicrafts such as pottery, ceramics, embroidery, carpets, folk costumes, tools, wood carvings, etc. There are also objects and weapons dating from the Russian-Turkish wars of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. A total of 8,000 items are on display but 10,000 others are kept in a reserve.
For a long time, the museum suffered from its dilapidated state and was in need of renovation. Its director Vasile Malcev fought to ensure that it was restored and that its collections were not damaged. At the entrance to the city, one can see a monument erected in 1849 by the architect G. Bouffeau and commemorating the victory of the Russian troops against the Ottomans at the battle of Cahul on August1, 1770. A bust of Lenin can be seen about 100 metres south-east of the museum.
