CATEDRALA SF MIHAIL ŞI GAVRIIL

Located in the central park of the city, the Episcopal Cathedral of the Saints-Michel-and-Gabriel was built in 1850 during the Tsarist era on the initiative of the Russian governor Pavel Fyodorov. Originally, an older wooden church, built in 1785, stood on this site. Its architecture is typical of churches built in Moldova, Russia and Ukraine in the 19th century. It is surmounted by two gilded bell towers, one of which is bulbous. The interior of the cathedral is full of magnificent frescoes in the classical style of the 19th century. The single-storey white iconostasis is surmounted by a beautiful fresco depicting the resurrection of Christ. The ceiling overlooking the choir features a fresco of Christ surrounded by angels. The building is under the protection of the State. The place hosts masses with beautiful songs and a beautiful liturgy on the occasion of Christmas, Easter or Holy Exchange. During certain ceremonies one can see the Bishop of Cahul and members of the local or national political authorities. The feast of the patron saints to whom the cathedral is dedicated is celebrated with great pomp on 21 November. Processions are organized on this occasion.

Near the cathedral is a bust of the painter Igor Vieru, a monument dedicated to the fighters of the Second World War and the city museum. The cathedral appears on a 1.30 lei stamp issued by the Moldovan postal service in 1997.
