Giurgiulești has a rich history and was first mentioned in a document of 1484. The site was inhabited as early as the 4th millennium BC. Archaeological research carried out in the 1960s led to the discovery of pottery and clay statuettes belonging to the culture of Gumelnița (middle of the 4th millennium BC). The remains of a Roman necropolis and medieval fortifications at the port terminal of Giurgiulești have also been uncovered. The sites were already of strategic value at the time. The fortress of Giurgiulești was built under Ștefan cel Mare at the end of the 15th century. Comprising ditches and a wooden palisade, its role was to protect a ford over the Prut and to defend the area against Ottoman invasions. On another site, not far away, towards Vadul Boului to the west on the banks of the Prut, were found traces of another necropolis, this time geo-dacian. It is 1.5 km long. It is oriented from north to south. Various ceramic objects dated to the 4th and 3rd centuries BC have been found there, which provide considerable information and bear witness to the material and spiritual culture of the people who lived in the vicinity. To the north of the town there is an ancient burial mound.
Giurgiulești also has a museum opened in 1960 by a biology professor and managed by Ana Popov. Hundreds of stuffed animals are exhibited there, but the museum lacks funds and is not always open.
