WAR MEMORIAL
A T-34 tank of the Soviet army, with the inscription "Za rodinu! "("For the Fatherland!") and the order of the Red Flag support the flag of Transnistria. This monument commemorates the sacrifice of Red Army soldiers during the Second World War. At the rear, the war memorial, with the tomb of the unknown soldier, is animated with a flame in memory of the victims of March 3, 1992, during the clashes of the "Dniester conflict" against the Moldovan forces. Nearby, another monument pays tribute to the Soviet soldiers killed in the 1979-1989 war in Afghanistan. Similar monuments can be found elsewhere in Transnistria, Moldova and throughout the former USSR. At one end of this small park is a chapel with beautiful frescoes and mosaics on the outside, as well as a long bell tower with a golden bulb. Not far from this memorial, you can also go and admire the equestrian statue of Marshal Alexander Suvorov who liberated the region from the Ottoman occupation. His portrait is depicted on the Transnistrian rubles. Nearby are the banks of the Dniester River and the Supreme Soviet with its statue of Lenin. Ceremonies are held on the occasion of celebrations commemorating the end of the Second World War, the war in Afghanistan or the 1991-1992 conflict and the Transnistrian "independence". It is a popular strolling spot for the residents of Tiraspol, close to parks and the banks of the Dniester River, and sometimes married couples come to have their photos taken near the memorial.
