The Kara Gani estate was founded in 2006 by the Cerven family, who originally had 0.5 ha of vines and produced their own wine on site. The vineyards extend over 10 ha in the meadows of the southern Boudjak, between Danube and Dniestr, not far from Lake Cahul. The grape varieties grown are Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Aligoté, Cabernet, Merlot and fetească neagră. The plant has modern production technologies and in particular German machinery enabling it to produce almost 30 t of wine per year. Kara Gani wines have often been noticed and distinguished in national wine competitions in Moldova and are considered the best wines of Gagauzia.
A small museum has been opened on the spot and presents historical objects that belonged to the Cerven family and are linked to the world of wine. Tastings and events are organised on the estate, including the National Moldavian Wine Day. Red wine tastings are accompanied by Gagauz dishes such as șurpa (soup), stuffed vine and cabbage leaves called dolma, kavarma (meat and vegetable stew cooked in a special terracotta pot called ghiveci) or gözleme (a pancake stuffed with meat, eggs, spinach or cheese). The premises are decorated in the style of traditional Gagauz country houses, with beautiful colourful carpets, old photographs, embroidered waistcoats, a spinning wheel and a cellar filled with many preserves.
