Monastery on the highest point of Santorini welcoming tourists again.
This male monastery (Ιερά Μόνη Προφήτη Ηλία Θήρας/Iera Moni Profitis Ilia Thiras) occupies the highest point on the island, at 567 m above sea level, next to a military base. Dedicated to the prophet Elijah, it was founded in 1711 by two monks from Pyrgos Kallistis. Rebuilt after the 1956 earthquake, the complex houses four churches and chapels, as well as a small museum and a store selling the monks' wine and dried tomatoes. Breathtaking views!
