BYZANTIN MUSEUM
Very interesting museum in several respects with a large educational room
Located in the former Ottoman Mecidiye Mosque (19th century), the Byzantine Museum exhibits a collection of bas-reliefs and post-Byzantine paintings in the large central hall. The highlights are a fresco (1734) from the Panagia Krina church and marble lintels from the Genoese period (14th century). The entrance houses an impressive reproduction of Delacroix's famous painting, The Chios Massacre, a reminder of one of the most famous and tragic episodes of the Greek war of independence, perpetrated against the Greek population of Chios in April 1822.
