BADSHAHI MOSQUE

It was during the reign of Emperor Aurangzeb that the sumptuous and imposing Badshahi Mosque was built between 1671 and 1673. Originally, it was designed to preserve a strand of the Prophet Mohammed's hair. Its architecture is the same as that of the Jama Mosque in Delhi. Under Sikh (from 1799) and British (from 1849) rule, the mosque was used as a military garrison. In 1852, feeling the anger of the faithful, the British decided to restore the building and restore it to its status as a place of worship. It is now the fifth largest mosque in the world with a capacity of 100,000 faithful.
