The exact origin of the fort is unknown but it could be in Antiquity. After having been destroyed and rebuilt several times, it was under the reign of the Mughal Emperor Akbar (1556-1605) that the fort would have acquired its present form. Each emperor who succeeded him brought new elements to it. Shah Jahan, in the years 1631-1632, added the Diwan-e-Wam, a room where public hearings were held, and the Sheesh Mahal (Palace of Mirrors).

Vaste ensemble écléctique de bâtiments rajoutés successivement par les différents empereurs moghols mais ayant chacun leur intérêt et leur particularisme.
