The excavations, which began in the 1920s, revealed a complex city with planned urbanization, particularly advanced for the time. The agglomeration is divided into two parts. The central block of the western part was artificially built with mud and mud bricks. The upper city of Mohenjodaro dominates the plain. At the top is a Buddhist stupa, the only remains more recent than any other, built in the 2nd century AD. To the east of the stupa, archaeologists discovered public baths, perhaps the first in history, with extremely neat architecture. They also discovered the ruins of an attic and an assembly room, which was probably used for ceremonies. In the lower part of the city, the remains of the houses bear witness to the progress of this city. Wide straight streets divide the city into housing blocks, almost all of which have a bathroom and a sewerage system, which are also found in the streets. Unfortunately, the excavations that brought this sophisticated and prosperous city to light have also weakened it. Having freed itself of the layer of soil that protected it, the city now faces rising groundwater, salt corrosion and flooding from the Indus River. Experts now fear that the site will collapse if radical measures are not taken by the government.
