SHAH JAHAN MOSQUE

Shah Jahan is the Mughal emperor who created the Taj Mahal, the Indian mausoleum that he had built for his late wife. At a time when Sindh province is under Mughal rule, he wishes to thank the people for their hospitality. In 1647, he launched the construction of a sumptuous mosque, a jewel of Mughal architecture, which is still very well preserved today. The building is made of red bricks and mosaic tiles, probably imported from the city of Hala. 93 domes cover the structure, producing an echo such that the prayers said in the mihrab, the small niche where the imam is located, can be heard throughout the building. The two main rooms are entirely covered with magnificent blue and white mosaic pieces with floral motifs, comparable to 17th century Iranian earthenware.

Même si on n'y retrouve pas toutes les caractéristiques architecturales des mosquées des Grands Moghols, plusieurs détails subtils nous indiquent pourtant bien l'empreinte moghole.
