MAKLI
The Makli necropolis is one of the largest in the world. The four dynasties that ruled Thatta (Samma, Arghoun, Tarkhan and Moghols) from 1320 to 1739 buried their queens and kings, their saints, scholars, philosophers, soldiers... Simple tombs in ruins or mausoleums of finely carved stone with calligraphic frieze extend over more than 10 km2. The remains, all made of yellow sandstone, however, bear witness to different architectural influences (Hindu, Mogul). The mausoleums of Isa Khan Tarkhan the Younger and his father, Jan Baba, both built before 1644, are among the most impressive. The one of Jam Nizammudin, one of the most important rulers of the Samma dynasty, is a superbly carved rectangular stone structure. Don't miss Diwan Shurfa Khan's, a massive square topped by a Persian style dome, covered with blue mosaic pieces.
If you wish to enjoy the serenity of the place a little longer, you can walk through the almost deserted alleys surrounding the site and visit the temples of the Sufi saints Shah Murad Shah Shirazi and Syed Ali Shirazi
