ST. MARTIN'S COLLEGE
A Gothic work built on the remains of a 9th century basilica, with a remarkable silhouette in Colmar
Colmar's imposing Saint-Martin collegiate church is a Gothic masterpiece. Built on the remains of a 9th-century basilica, it was intended to have two towers, but only one was actually built. In 1572, a fire destroyed the roof frame and crown, and the tower was replaced in 1575 by the bulbous lantern that gives the building its remarkable silhouette. The ochre tones of Rouffach sandstone give it an unparalleled luminous intensity. The light playing on the sculptures of the Saint-Nicolas portal is truly sumptuous!
