FONTAINE SCHWENDI
Fountain topped by a bronze statue designed by Colmar sculptor Auguste Bartholdi
On the Place de l'Ancienne-Douane just behind the Koïfhus, this magnificent fountain is topped by a bronze statue designed by Colmar sculptor Auguste Bartholdi in 1898. The statue represents Lazare de Schwendi (1522-1583), a famous diplomat and imperial general under Charles V and later Maximilian II. In recognition of his services, he was awarded the seigneury of Hohlandsberg and the castle of Kientzheim. Lazare de Schwendi is shown holding a Tokay plant, the grape variety he brought back from his military campaigns in Hungary.
