Museum in Colmar, presenting the history and evolution of toys, which have marked generations from the century to the present day
Welcome to the phantasmagorical realm of toys! Officially opened on December 3, 1993, this museum is located in the heart of Colmar's pedestrian zone, in a former local cinema, transformed over 3 levels into a veritable playground. Along a thematic trail, it presents the history and evolution of toys that have marked generations from the 19th century to the present day. More than a playful showcase, it's an ethnological museum in its own right, as the toys on display reflect the world in which they were created. A bedroom from the 1950s and 1980s lets you step back in time. An entire floor is devoted to the history of model railways and trains as playthings. It features two animated layouts carefully decorated by a team of enthusiastic volunteers from the association Musée animé du Jouet et des Petits Trains (MAJEPT). The museum also gives pride of place to building sets, dolls, robots and mechanical toys, scale models and other optical, scientific and transport toys.
Until October1, 2024, the temporary exhibition is dedicated to "Playing is an art". This is an opportunity to discover 200 additional toys from different eras and origins. Nine artistic disciplines are explored through the prism of toys, giving children the opportunity to play an active part in these practices. The Musée du Jouet de Colmar offers regular events over the months: for more information, visit the museum's social networks (Facebook and Instagram).
