JEWISH MUSEUM
Museum hosting a collection of objects testifying to the presence of a Jewish community in Alsace for several centuries
The Bartholdi Museum of the city of Colmar houses within its walls a collection of objects testifying to the presence of a Jewish community that has been well established in Alsace for several centuries. Located on the first floor, the Jean-Claude Katz room (named after the man who initiated the Fonds d'Art Juif Historique et Contemporain) has, since 1993, been devoted to the art, culture and religious traditions of Alsatian Judaism.
Among the objects and works on display, a holy stone arch carved in the shape of an Alsatian cupboard contains Torah scrolls (manuscripts on parchment of the five books of Moses), one chapter of which is read during public services. This 18th-century holy ark comes from a former synagogue in Bergheim. It contains, among other items, an authentic Pentateuch from 1822, Hanukkah lamps, a copy of the Torah printed on parchment, Seder (Easter) dishes and a three-dimensional model of the Horburg synagogue. A true compendium of life and symbols that invites to better understand the life of a people steeped in history.
