THE FIELD OF MARCH
The Champ de Mars, a precious green lung located in the heart of Auguste Bartholdi's birthplace
When you are in Colmar, you must absolutely take the time to walk around the Champ de Mars, a precious green lung located in the heart of Auguste Bartholdi's native city! Located between the boulevard of the same name and the Avenue de la République, it is an authentic haven of peace where one loves to stroll. Originally, this place was a public promenade before being transformed, in 1793 (revolutionary aspirations), into a military exercise ground and a festive place renamed "Champ de Mars". During the 19th century, this pleasure park gradually took on its current form, with its vast alleys whose layout is reminiscent of... a cross of the Legion of Honor! The northern part of the park became Place Rapp when the statue of General Rapp was officially installed in 1856. Nowadays, it is a delight to walk around the Champ-de-Mars throughout the seasons. During the summer season, people like to come and meet with friends or family. The parents read on the lawn while the children frolic in their bathing suits under the water jets of the Admiral Bruat fountain. Rollerblading enthusiasts sometimes come to give a few public demonstrations. A 1900 carousel as well as a small square with a slide and swings make the happiness of the children. In winter, its periphery hosts an ephemeral ice rink, various Christmas animations and a tree market very appreciated by Colmarians because they can access it by car to load the king of the forests in their trunk!
