IGLESIA SAN BUENAVENTURA
Probably the most beautiful church in Paraguay, and certainly the best example of Hispano-Guarani Baroque. Built between 1755 and 1772, its architecture is similar to that of theoga guazú, the large Guarani house. It stands in the middle of the old reduction plaza, in a vast green space. Imposing (70 m x 30 m) and elegant, it is made of adobe and wood, surrounded by wide colonnades. The imposing roof, which descends very low to protect the walls, is supported by solid wooden pillars set deep into the ground. It was erected before the thick adobe walls, which provide excellent insulation from both cold and heat, were built. The main entrance faces east. Two entrances to the north and south. The temple's exterior is sober: white, without relief or ornamentation. This austerity contrasts with the interior of the church, rich in sculpture and gilding. In this way, the Franciscans wanted to convey the spiritual message of humility of appearance, for the depth of the soul. The magnificent central altar and altarpiece are the work of Portuguese artist José de Souza Cavadas. Also worth seeing are the pulpit, confessional, dome and wooden sculptures. The two side altars were added later, the originals having been transferred to the Trinidad church in Asunción in the mid-19th century. The wooden bell tower, rebuilt several times, has retained its original shape. The sacristan, Antolín Alemán, can switch on the church lights, so you can fully appreciate the interior.
