This colonial building is the only original cabildo (municipal palace) preserved in Paraguay. Originally built in 1784, José Gaspar Rodríguez de Francia had it rebuilt in 1817, with the addition of a balcony overlooking the square, from which, fifty years later, Francisco Solano López delivered his patriotic speeches. The Cabildo was restored in 1969, and its ground-floor museum features fine pieces of sacred art, as well as paintings, weapons, objects and furniture from the era of the War of the Triple Alliance.
