The ruins of the church of San Carlos Borromeo represent one of the symbols of the Paraguayan resistance during the Great War. The temple inaugurated in 1861 was one of the largest in South America, with a capacity of 5,000 worshippers. It will be destroyed five years later, bombed for six months by enemy troops. There is not much left, but the site is beautiful, with the river below. The Jesuit sculptures were transferred to the new church, built just behind it, with the bricks of the old temple.
