HOUSE OF IRON
Museum showing the mining past of the Orne region, with models, photos and tools used at the time.
Although little-known, Orne's mining past is part of its heritage, as it is for many Norman families. The Orne region was home to dozens of forges and mines, around which towns were built. The Maison du Fer recreates this rich past with models, photos, period films and tools. The museum is also the information point for discovery tours of the forges, mines and towns along a thirty-kilometer stretch of land, including those at La Ferrière-aux-Étangs, Larchamp and Saint-Clair-de-Halouze, which operated until 1901 and 1978 respectively.
