The Solar de Artigas is a reconstruction of the house where General José Artigas (1764-1850), a great figure of Uruguayan independence, lived confined from 1820 to 1840. Artigas found refuge in Paraguay as a political exile until his death in Asunción in 1850. The house was built by the Uruguayan government. It is home to a museum that pays tribute to the national hero. The town's other historical museum, run by the municipality, exhibits relics from the Triple Alliance War and some objects used by the Aché Indians.
