LORRAINE DAISY CHAPEL
Seigniorial chapel, once double-storey, one of the last vestiges of the Château d’Essay
Last vestige of the county and then of the duchy of Alençon, the chapel was built by the family of Bellême in 1166, at the same time as the castle, of which only the surrounding walls remain. Pierre II of Alençon and Marguerite de Lorraine had made it their main residence. Built on the plan of the Saintes-Chapelles, the monument had two floors: the upper chapel communicating with the seigneurial apartments, and the lower chapel assigned to the service people and the garrison.
