CASTRAL SITE OF THE DUKES OF ALENÇON
Established in the century by the de Bellême family, this is a rare example of the heritage of the county and duchy of Alençon.
Established in the 11th century by the de Bellême family, the Ducs’ castral site (or motte castrale) included a feudal castle and a chapel. The chapel still exists, but all that remains of the castle are ruins. The site is a rare testimony to the heritage of the county and later duchy of Alençon. It was here that Pierre II d’Alençon, founder of the walled town of Essay, settled. Partly destroyed during the Hundred Years’ War, the château was remodelled between the 14th and 16th centuries.
