MONASTERO ESARCHICO DI SANTA MARIA DI GROTTAFERRATA
Abbey where the Byzantine rites and the Eastern monastic tradition are still preserved.
The abbey was built in 1004 on the ruins of a villa once owned by Cicero. The founders, Greek monks, were at the origin of the Byzantine rites practiced in this Catholic church. It is a unique case: founded fifty years before the schism that led to the separation of Catholics and Orthodox, it has always remained in communion with the Church of Rome while preserving the Byzantine rite and the Eastern monastic tradition of its origins.
