RISNJAK NATURE PARK OFFICE
Protected habitat for the three large mammals at Crni Lug with as many as 1,148 plant species and subspecies.
A nature park where peaceful mountains reign supreme, where you can stay in an approved youth hostel. Here we find the extreme temperature variations that characterize Croatia and give it its ecological diversity, between the Dinaric Alps (Gorki Kotar), the forested northern Balkan mountains, the continental influence to the north, and the coastal regions bordering the Adriatic Sea to the south. On a karstic relief, the vegetation on dolines is luxuriant. This is a protected habitat for large mammals (bear, wolf, lynx, chamois, deer). There are no fewer than 1,148 plant species and subspecies. A paradise for mountaineers and serious walkers! Enjoy trails in the shade of hundred-year-old larch trees, along the Kupa River, around Lake Lokve with a break at a restaurant, climbing walls, trekking and a guaranteed breath of fresh air.
What you need for a good hike
- Before setting off, check with the NP office for weather forecasts to avoid storms halfway up.
- Before climbing Veliki Risnjak (1,528 m) or Snježnik (1,506 m), be sure to check safety conditions.
- Ask for a map of marked paths and trails, such as the Leska educational trail along the River Kupa.
- Whatever the route, bring good walking shoes, warm clothing, fresh water, dried fruit, energy cakes...
